Subject: graduation party

Hi Tom,
Great news! Tina’s invited me to her graduation party. I’m looking forward to
celebrating with her family and friends. But I’m not quite sure what to wear. Should
I go in my smartest suit or choose something more casual? I don’t want to look funny
if the other guests are dressed in jeans and T-shirts. You’ve been to several
graduation parties, so maybe you can help me decide.

A. STARTING A PUBLIC TRANSPORT COMPANY
B. AN IMPORTANT CHILDHOOD EXPERIENCE
C. ENO’S ATTITUDE TO CARS
D. CREATING THE RULES FOR CITY TRAFFIC

THE FATHER OF TRAFFIC SAFETY

2.1.

It all started in 1867, long before the car was invented. William Phelps Eno was only
nine years old then. He and his mother were travelling in a carriage pulled by horses in New
York City. Suddenly they found themselves in the middle of a traffic jam. Young William
learnt from that incident that to keep the traffic moving there needed to be some rules.

2.2.

At the end of the 19th century, carriages started to be replaced by cars in American cities.
At the age of 40, Eno left the family business to work on road safety. He developed the first
traffic plans for New York, Paris and London. It was Eno’s idea that all vehicles going in the
same direction should drive on the same side of the street. He also invented stop signs,
one-way streets, taxi stands and many other traffic-related solutions. Without Eno’s work,
driving would be a much more dangerous experience today.

2.3.

Although William Phelps Eno is known as the “Father of Traffic Safety”, he did not believe
that cars would become so widely used in the future and expected that people would soon
become bored with them. In fact, he hated cars and never learned to drive. When he had to
go somewhere by car, he hired a driver.

that cars would become so widely used in the future and expected that people would soon

A DAY IN LONDON

When my dad finally agreed that I could apply to the Royal Ballet School in London, I was
invited to attend an audition*.
Just as we got on our bus, I asked dad, “ls London a nice place?”
“I don’t know, I’ve never been there,” he answered.
I couldn’t believe it! He was forty-five and he’d never visited the capital! We didn’t say
anything else while travelling.
We arrived late, so we went straight to the hotel. I had a hard time falling asleep because
I was feeling nervous. I couldn’t stop thinking about the audition. The next morning it wasn’t
any better. I was so worried that I couldn’t eat anything for breakfast. I just drank some juice
before we left for the Royal Ballet School.
When I looked up at the grand building, I felt sick.
The atmosphere in the changing room didn’t feel welcoming at all. It was a place full of boys
dressed in expensive clothes. “I’ve made a mistake,” I thought. “I want to dance. But this
place is not for me.”
Then one of the boys talked to me.
“ls this your first audition?” he asked. “lt’s my second. I’m Simon. What’s your name?”
“Billy Elliot, I’m from Everington. Nice to meet you,” I answered.
“You have a strange accent,” the boy said, and I felt that he didn’t like me.
I hated the feeling of being different. I ran out of the changing room and found dad at the top
of the stairs.
“Dad, I don’t want to do this. Let’s go home! Please…”
My dad firmly put his hand on my shoulder and pushed me back towards the changing room.
“Go back in there!” he said.
At that moment, I had no idea that his sharp reaction was a manifestation of true love.
